While it could potentially happen, is is entirely fair? The 360 will have had 2 additional years on the market as the leading console for Microsoft than the Wii. Shockingly it was in the later years of its life that the Xbox 360 really took off. Is it really Nintendo’s fault the industry declined? Oh, and of course, reports show the 360 will outsell the Wii in the United States.įor its generation, the Xbox 360, not the Wii, will end up as the number one selling console system in the U.S. Yes, it’s true Nintendo are known as innovators and best suited at times to stimulate the market, but Sony did it before with the PlayStation 2, so it’s not unheard of to for other companies to take that mantle. If Nintendo truly has that sort of power to essentially control the main flow of the whole industry… then why can’t the competition step up when Nintendo starts to downturn and take massive advantage and stimulate the market? So wait, Nintendo was the only reason the industry was flying high to begin with? How are they at fault when their system got old and stale that no one else was around to buck the decline? Sure, it points to strong sales of the 360 in the last couple of years (and really, the sales of the PS3 as well), but if the industry is still in a decline “despite” these strong sales simply because Nintendo started to fall off, I think that says a lot more about the industry in general than Nintendo themselves. Consumers love games more than ever but a new order of game providers is resulting in market shifts that are proving painful for Nintendo and other established game companies. The reality is that many Wii U systems were sitting unsold on shelves at year end. Of course, the Wii was supply constrained at launch and sold at a lower price so that is not surprising. Nintendo’s spin for the Wii U focused on how it made more revenue than the Wii at launch. Unlike Microsoft, Nintendo has been in a major downward cycle, much of it self-inflicted. In reality the decline has mainly been due to the aging console systems and more importantly because of Nintendo’s collapse.
